Delhi Public School, Pune, was privileged to host yet another SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) event, celebrating the richness of Indian heritage. The session featured the graceful and lyrical dance form of Mohiniyattam, presented by the eminent Dr. Rekha Raju. Dr. Rekha Raju is an "A" Graded Doordarshan artist, ICCR empanelled artiste, and recipient of the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2022). A performer of over 2400 shows worldwide, Dr. Raju is also a PhD holder in Mohiniyattam. She is a Chartered Accountant and hold an MBA degree, exemplifying a rare blend of discipline and creativity.
The lecture-demonstration began with an invocation to the Almighty and the Gurus. Dr. Raju introduced the art form and narrated the stories she would portray through her performance. Dr. Raju performed ‘Chollakatti’ in Ragam Ahir Kalyani, a piece rich in rhythmic syllables, followed by an engaging abhinaya performance depicting Lord Ganpati tying a snake on his belly to stitch it back. She then demonstrated Hasta Mudras where she encouraged audience interaction. The students matched the mudras with the recitation. This was followed by ‘Tandava – Nataraja Stuti’ in Ragam Revati, Talam Adi, narrating the making of Rudra Veena. The finale, a soulful Krishna Stuti in Malayalam, set to Ragam Vaijanti, Adi Talam, left the audience spellbound.
The Principal emphasized that the event was not merely a performance but a transformative experience, instilling grace and inspiration in everyone present. The session concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by the Cultural Prefect. it was a morning where tradition met inspiration and left everyone enriched and mesmerized.
