Beyond the Label: Navigating Invisible Disabilities with the Enable Programme

On June 5, 2026, Delhi Public School, Pune, hosted the "Enable Programme," the first online session of the Trinayani initiative dedicated to its middle school faculty. Moderated by Ms Ritika Sahani, the orientation was thoughtfully designed to move past abstract theories and help educators actively build an inclusive school culture that honours every student's unique learning journey. A critical turning point in her presentation was urging teachers to abandon the traditional "medical model" of disability, which tends to fixate on a student's perceived deficits. Instead, she championed a "social model" focused on dismantling systemic educational barriers and replacing mere sympathy with genuine empathy. Furthermore, she stressed the power of communication, reminding educators that updating our vocabulary to respectful, person-first language is essential for maintaining the dignity of all learners.

To ensure these vital concepts translated into real-world teaching, the latter half of the program tackled the practical complexities of managing invisible disabilities, such as neurodivergent traits and specific learning difficulties. Recognising these challenges early is crucial for middle schoolers, so Ms Sahani equipped the staff with highly tangible strategies to adapt their lesson plans, ensure accessible instruction, and nurture a peer environment rooted in mutual acceptance. The faculty walked away with a profound understanding of how to seamlessly weave this inclusive philosophy into their daily routines. Ultimately, the workshop beautifully brought to life the wisdom of author Rick Riordan, reminding everyone that true fairness isn't about giving every child the same thing, but rather ensuring that every student gets exactly what they need to thrive.
